NATO is unable to resolve the dispute between Georgia and Abkhazia and its actions aggravate tensions in the region, the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

NATO is unable to resolve the dispute between Georgia and Abkhazia and its actions aggravate tensions in the region, the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

The statement came in response to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly's recent resolution on Georgia, which called Abkhazia and South Ossetia "occupied territories".

NATO is seeking to distort the facts of the August 2008 war between Russia and Georgia over South Ossetia and shift the viewpoint on these events, the ministry said.

"The Abkhazian party considers this biased interpretation of the events yet another manifestation of NATO's pro-Georgian position," the statement read.

"NATO is an organization that has been contributing to the intensive militarization of Georgia for many years, stirring up the revanchist mindset of the Georgian leadership, which led to the August 2008 bloodshed in South Ossetia."

Moscow recognized the independence of Abkhazia and another former Georgian republic, South Ossetia after the five-day war and has since been the guarantor of their security, deploying thousands of troops and border guards to the tiny republics.
