An outbreak of cholera in the Caribbean state of Haiti has claimed the lives of some 1,250 people, the EFE news agency said on Monday.

About 29,860 people have been hospitalized since the disease broke out in the Caribbean country in late October.

Haiti is still struggling to cope with the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake that killed over 250,000 people.

The situation has been aggravated by hurricane Tomas, which brought torrential rains to the island earlier this month, claiming 20 lives and destroying a network of potable water supplies.

Up to 1.3 million Haitians are still living in temporary tent camps with poor hygiene conditions.

Sporadic cases of cholera have also been detected in the neighboring Dominican Republic and the United States.
