One person was killed and two slightly injured when two cars exploded with an interval of ten minutes in downtown Stockholm, Swedish media reported.

The SVT channel said the first blast, near Stockholm's busy shopping street Drottninggatan took place at about 18:52 Moscow time on Saturday. The second took place some 200-300 meters away from the first.

Swedish police spokesman told the SR radio station that the first blast is believed to be a gas tank explosion. In the second blast, a man apparently blew himself up near his car.

An eyewitness, interviewed by Dagens Nyheter, said the victim in his twenties was found lying on his back near the exploded car.

"The victim was still trying to breathe, but his heart has already stopped beating," the eyewitness said. "It looked like the blast occurred right next to his belly, there were no injuries on his face or torso."

SVT said a bag, full of nails, was lying next to the victim, but police did not confirm the report.

Sweden's Tidningarnas Telegrambyra (TT) newswire said some ten minutes before the first blast it received a warning letter, headlined "To Sweden and the Swedish people," with attached audio files in Swedish and Arabic.

The letter expressed regrets about the country's reluctance to condemn Lars Vilks, Swedish cartoonist who drew Prophet Mohammed with the body of a dog, angering Muslims and sparking a lot controversy.

It also said Sweden should withdraw its 600-strong military continent from Afghanistan.

"Our actions would speak for itself unless you stop waging a war against Islam, offending the Prophet and halt your stupid support for... Vilks," one of the audio files said.

SAPO, Sweden's security police, said it also received a warning letter before the blast but did not disclose its contents.

Swedish police and security services have been on increased alert in the past five weeks. In late October a bomb warning was issued for the country's second largest city of Gothenburg after a "reliable source" said that a blast is being prepared in the city's downtown area.
