An Iranian-Dutch woman, detained after taking part in anti-government protests in 2009, has been hanged for drug smuggling by Iran, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Saturday.

"A woman smuggler named Zahra Bahrami…has been hanged today for the possession and selling of narcotics," Mehr said, citing the prosecutor’s office.

The daughter of the 45-year-old told group International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that the charges were fabricated after her mother’s detention over participation in the December 2009 demonstrations, which occurred while she was visiting relatives.

On January 5, Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal expressed "extreme concern" about Bahrami.

She was charged with smuggling 450 grams of cocaine into Iran from the Netherlands. Iran does not recognize dual citizenship.
