The number of casualties from clashes on Tahrir Square in the Egyptian capital continues to grow, amounting to eight dead and 900 injured, Health Minister Ahmed Sameh Farid said on Thursday.

Various sources, however, report that at least 10 people have been killed and some 1,500 injured as clashes between protesters and President Hosni Mubarak's supporters continued on Thursday.

According to some media reports, a foreign citizen was beaten to death on the square earlier in the day.

Wednesday's violence was repeated on Thursday, with rioters hurling stones and smoke grenades at one another as the army maintained neutrality. Protesters were also fired on by pro-government supporters during morning prayers on Thursday.

Anti-government protests broke out in Egypt on January 25. The unrest has already claimed the lives of at least 300 people and injured several thousand across the North African state.
