The explosion at a pipeline in Egypt's North Sinai on Saturday has targeted the gas supplies to Jordan, not Israel, Al Jazeera has reported.

The blast at the pipeline, which supplies gas to Israel, Jordan and other states, occurred on Saturday morning near the Egyptian town of El Arish, close to the Egyptian-Israeli border.

The Egyptian state television reporter has blamed the blast on "terrorists who took advantage of the unstable security situation in the country."

The governor of the province said later the Egyptian Army stopped the gas flow at the pipeline following an explosion.

He said a gas station located near the blast site was not damaged. The fire that broke out after the explosion has been extinguished.

The Israeli radio said earlier gas was still flowing to Israel despite the blast.

The Egyptian opposition earlier called to shut the Egyptian gas supplies to Israel citing security threat.

Israel has earlier voiced concerns that the shutdown of the pipeline could bring severe damage to the country.

Egypt was the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel and sign a peace agreement with the Israeli government in 1979. The move has been criticized both in Egypt and the Arab world.
