Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko may follow the same unfavorable destiny as his embattled Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak, senior U.S. senator John McCain said on Friday.

Political events in Belarus and Egypt have recently drawn strong media attention, as opposition protests hit both countries. The difference is that Belarus police managed to suppress a possible upheaval swiftly, while in Egypt the protests are already lasting for over a week and the turmoil is heating up.

The top leadership of Egypt's ruling National Democratic party resigned on Saturday.

"As we see the events unfolding in the Middle East, we also believe that events should unfold here for the people of Belarus," McCain said at Munich Security Conference.

"Lukashenko is on the wrong side of history, and sooner or later we will see democracy and freedom in Belarus," McCain said. He called the Belarusian strongman "a ruthless, oppressive, brutal tyrant."

The European Union and the United States recently announced the introduction of new travel and financial sanctions on Lukashenko and 157 other state and government officials in response to the clampdown the opposition protests.

"We will continue to urge for further sanctions, both on the part of the European Union and the U.S. and other countries against Lukashenko and his corrupt regime," McCain said.
