NATO will not interfere in Egypt's affairs, the alliance's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday, but expressed concern over the continuing protests in the country.

The unrest began in Egypt on January 25 and has left some hundreds dead and over 5,000 injured.

"NATO will not interfere with the domestic situation in Egypt," Rasmussen told journalists in Brussels.

The NATO secretary general said the events in Egypt, inspired by the revolts in Tunisia, may have a serious effect on Europe.

Rasmussen urged Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Friday to "ensure a peaceful transition to democracy."

Mubarak has pledged not to run in scheduled elections in September, but has refused to step down, saying his premature departure would lead to "chaos."
