The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in the West Bank on Saturday promised to hold fair presidential and legislative elections by September, however the announcement immediately faced opposition from the Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza.
The call for polls came amid stalemate in Israeli-Palestinian talks and the political upheaval in Egypt, a key player in peace efforts.
Hamas said would not take part in the elections and would not recognize its results "because they [the elections] would only aggravate the split in the society and act against the interests of the Palestinians," official Hamas spokesman said.
