A government building in the Libyan capital Tripoli is ablaze after anti-government protesters went on the rampage, the Al-Arabiya TV news channel said on Monday.

The security forces have begun to withdraw from the capital on Monday, according to Al Jazeera TV.

A number of witnesses said protesters had torched public buildings in the capital overnight, including police stations as well as the People's Committee offices. The Libyan parliament meets in the building when it is in session, the channel said, adding that the reasons for the conflagration were still unclear.

Protests in Libya, one of the world's major oil suppliers, started on February 15 amid violent anti-government demonstrations across the Middle East. The riots have been mostly in the east, where the country's 40-year leader, Muammar Gaddafi does not enjoy strong popularity, but unrest has reportedly been spreading to the western regions as well.

The human rights organization Human Rights Watch reported that the death toll reached at least 233, but Libyan authorities who have tried to brutally suppress the demonstrations, have confirmed the death of 84 people.

At least 61 people have died in clashes between protesters and security forces in Tripoli, Al-Jazeera said on Monday citing official medical sources.
