Japan's prime minister, Naoto Kan, on Friday vowed to give more detailed information to the international community on the unfolding crisis at a quake-crippled nuclear plant in the country's northeast.

He was speaking amid renewed efforts to cool troubled reactors at Fukushima Daiichi plant to try and avert a meltdown of nuclear cores.

The head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog earlier arrived in Tokyo to urge more transparency in what he described as an "extremely serious" crisis.

"This is not something that just Japan should deal with, and the people of the entire world should cooperate with Japan and the people in the disaster areas," International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano told reporters.

Fukushima has been hit a number of explosions since last week's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands.
