At least ten people were killed on Wednesday in a suicide attack on a meeting of tribal elders in eastern Afghanistan, local officials said.
One of those killed was Haji Malik Zarin, a close ally of the Afghan president, provincial police chief Khalilullah Ziayi said.
"The suicide attacker targeted a local council meeting of tribal elders," he said.
The attack took place in the Kunar province near the Pakistan border.
Zarin was a former military commander who fought against the Soviet army in the 1980s.
The Taliban has denied it carried out the attack.
