China is pushing to continue talks between Tehran and the six international mediators on Iran's controversial nuclear program, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Thursday at a news briefing.

The Iran Six, which comprises Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany, has been trying since 2003 to convince Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program and to alleviate concerns about its nuclear ambitions. Iran is presently under a number of UN sanctions.

"The Chinese side hopes for an early resumption of dialogue on the Iranian nuclear issue," Hong said.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution imposing sanctions on Iran on June 9, 2010, after Tehran announced its plans to enrich uranium to 20%. Tehran has also announced its intentions to build a second uranium enriching plant.

The latest round of Iran-Six talks over its nuclear program, which took place in Istanbul, yielded no significant results. Both Russia and the EU said they were disappointed with the talks.
