The Copenhagen City Court sentenced Chechen-born Lors Dukayev to 12 years in prison on charges of terrorism and illegal weapons possession, the Copenhagen Post reported on Tuesday.

The court said Dukayev, 25, will be expelled from Denmark after serving his term.

Dukayev was arrested after he accidentally set off an explosive device at the Hotel Jorgensen in the center of Copenhagen on September 10, 2010, injuring only himself.

The court convicted Dukayev for attempting to send a letter bomb to the offices of Jyllands-Posten newspaper in retaliation for the 2005 publication of 12 cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.

Danish news agencies reported that investigators were able to identify Dukayev because of a prosthetic leg with a serial number at the scene of the explosion. Dukayev lost his leg in a mine explosion in Chechnya when he was 12 years old.

Before the sentence was read, Dukayev told the court he was innocent. "I am about to be sentenced for something that I have not done," he said in French.
