Georgian lawmakers passed on Tuesday a law prohibiting Soviet symbols, banning former high-ranking Soviet officials from occupying high state posts, and strengthening anti-terrorism measures in the country.

The law, entitled the Freedom Charter, was drawn up by Gia Tortladze, the leader of the opposition Strong Georgia faction. The law unites two bills: one restricting the rights of former Soviet special services and top Communist party officials, and the other banning Soviet symbols in public places and introducing additional measures aimed at fighting terrorism.

In line with the new law, which needs to be signed by the president to come into force, former Soviet security agents and high-ranking Communists are not allowed to work in many Georgian representative and executive bodies, including the cabinet, presidential administration and state departments, as well as in the country's Security Council and parliament apparatus.

They are also prohibited from working as judges and occupying high positions at universities and public television channels.

Such people in the rank of lieutenant colonel and higher ranks are also not allowed to work at the ministries of interior and defense and Georgian special services' operative units.

The law also bans Soviet symbols in public places and orders the creation of a special commission to consider renaming cities, streets and villages named after Soviet leaders.

A package of anti-terrorism measures includes increasing security at strategic facilities and monitoring goods imported to Georgia and large money transfers.
