Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military chief, is being flown to The Hague where he will face a tribunal on war crimes and genocide charges, Serbian Justice Minister Snezana Malovic said.

"Mladic is on board a plane heading to The Hague," Malovic told journalists during an extraordinary news conference.

“By extraditing Mladic to The Hague, Serbia has fulfilled its international and moral duty,” she added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mladic’s lawyer said Serbia's war crimes court would consider the detained general’s appeal against his transfer to the UN war crimes tribunal. He also said Mladic is so sick he may not live to see the start of his trial.

A Belgrade court earlier ruled Gen. Mladic fit enough to travel to the UN court.

Mladic’s lawyer has said he will request another independent medical examination of the 69-year-old alleged war criminal, who was arrested last week after 16 years on the run.

Mladic is accused of committing war crimes during the Bosnian War, including a massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995.
