More than 50 people were killed on Tuesday from a fuel tank explosion in the Libyan city of Sirte, BBC quoted National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Leith Mohammed as saying.

Mohamed told the BBC that the explosion occured late on Monday while a crowd of people was waiting to fill their cars.

"There was an enormous explosion and a huge fire," AFP quoted Mohamed as saying, adding that there were "dozens of charred bodies" at the scene of the blast.

NTC officials and Syrian-based Al-Rai TV channel reported more than 100 people had died in the blast.

Sirte is the hometown of the late Libyan former leader Muammar Gaddafi who was captured alive by the NTC fighters on October 20 in Sirte and later died of gunshot wounds.
