The number of those injured in Friday's magnitude-6.9 earthquake in Peru has reached 83, the Peruvian El Comercio newspaper said on Saturday.

The quake, which struck near the country's southern coast, destroyed and seriously damaged 132 houses.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered 51 kilometers south-southwest of Ica, a provincial capital of about 200,000 people, at a depth of 35 kilometers. The quake also moderately shook the country's capital of Lima.

Ica suffered widespread damage in the 2007 quake, which killed 596 people and largely destroyed the town of Pisco.

Peru's territory is crossed by the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
