The BRICS group of emerging nations, including Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa, has agreed to work out a joint position on the situation in the European Union at the G20 summit, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.
"We have indeed discussed the difficulties existing in the euro zone and the necessity to work out a joint position of the BRICS states," Medvedev said at a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.
Hu said the BRICS leaders had exchanged views on "the global economic situation and on issues connected with the European debt crisis. And now we can exchange opinions on other questions, including bilateral issues."
Arkady Dvorkovich, Medvedev's economic adviser, said the BRICS leaders had agreed to establish closer contacts between their finance ministries and sherpas. The group’s leaders support the idea of holding regular talks to work out a joint position on the eurozone and defend that position in talks with the International Monetary Fund and other bodies, Dvorkovich said.
