The Syrian Interior Ministry on Friday announced an amnesty for persons who surrender their weapons by next Saturday, state television reported.

"The interior ministry invites those who carry arms, who sold them, distributed them, bought them or financed their purchase and who have not committed any murder to turn themselves in and surrender their weapons to the nearest police station in their district ... from Saturday, November 5 to November 12," the report said.

According to UN estimates, more than 3,000 people have been killed in Syria since mid-March, when first bloody anti-regime protests began.

At least 20 civilians have been killed in clashes with government troops in Syria on Thursday, a day after Damascus pledged to withdraw its forces from protest centers under a deal with the Arab League to end months of bloody massacre.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the civilians were killed in Homs, a flashpoint for the unrest, where troops reportedly used tank-mounted machineguns.
