Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling military council, will be appointed as defense minister in Egypt’s new coalition government, council member Gen. Mohamed al-Assar said in an interview with Egyptian TV on Thursday.
The composition of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and the country’s top military command will remain unchanged until a new constitution is adopted and parliamentary elections held, he said.
The Supreme Council will transfer full power to incoming president Mohamed Morsi on Saturday, he said.
The Egyptian cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri, submitted its resignation to the head of the Supreme Council on Monday following the announcement that Mohamed Morsi won the presidential election.
Morsi has called for national unity and pledged to form a coalition government.
