Syria has handed the United Nations a list of 108 foreign citizens arrested by the Syrian authorities over their alleged involvement in terrorism.
Syrian Permanent Ambassador to the UN Bashar Jaafari sent the list and a letter, dated October 18, to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Security Council Chairman Gert Rosenthal.
“The list explains the reasons behind each individual’s arrest in connection with their involvement in terrorism in Syria,” read the letter, which was made available to journalists late Friday.
The regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sought to portray the ongoing civil war in the country as a battle between pro-government forces and shadowy Islamic militant and terrorist groups.
The violent conflict between the Syrian government and opposition forces has raged since March 2011. The fighting has claimed more than 30,000 lives, according to the UN.
