The oldest known survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp has died at the age of 108, PolskaTimes newspaper reported on Monday.

Antoni Dobrowolski died on Sunday in the town of Debno (north-west Poland) where he lived after World War II, the newspaper quoted an official of the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum as saying.

Dobrowolski, a primary school teacher, ran secret classes during Nazi Germany's occupation of Poland, when anything beyond four years of elementary education was prohibited.

In 1942, Dobrowolski was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz. He was later moved to the concentration camps of Gross-Rosen and then Sachsenhausen, where he was liberated by the Soviet Army in the spring of 1945 as the war ended.

Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration camp, where more than 1 million people died, 90% of them Jews.
