MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) – A strong earthquake struck northern Myanmar on Sunday, causing a bridge and a gold mine to collapse and leaving at least 12 people feared dead.
The magnitude 6.8 quake struck at 7.42 a.m. local time some 56 km (34 miles) north-east of the town of Shwebo at a depth of 9.8 km (6.1 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.
News reports said several miners were killed when a gold mine collapsed while several people died when a bridge under construction across the Irrawaddy River east of Shwebo fell.
The quake struck just a week ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to Myanmar.
