VILNIUS, December 5 (RIA Novosti) - Twenty-one customs officers at a Lithuanian customs checkpoint were detained Wednesday on suspicion of corruption and abuse of office, the Customs Department press service said.
The officers were detained at the Medininkai post of the Vilnius territorial customs service by the department’s internal investigations unit on Wednesday morning.
“The case will be overseen by Prosecutor for Organized Crime and Corruption Martynas Jovaiša,” press secretary Gintare Vitkauskaite told RIA Novosti.
This is perhaps the largest corruption case in the history of Lithuanian customs service, the Department said.
The Medininkai customs post is on the border with Belarus, 30 kilometers southeast of Vilnius.
