Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti announced on Saturday his plans to resign after former premier Silvio Berlusconi's center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party withdrew its support for the government, media reported.

MOSCOW, December 9 (RIA Novosti) - Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti announced on Saturday his plans to resign after former premier Silvio Berlusconi's center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party withdrew its support for the government, media reported.

Monti, leading a non-elected technocrat cabinet, said he would step down after passing a budget and a financial stability law, British broadcaster BBC reported.

President Giorgio Napolitano’s office said in a statement that Monti “made clear his intention to present his resignation,” as quoted by the BBC.

Berlusconi, who earlier on Saturday announced he would run for office again in 2013, said Monti's policy had harmed the country.

PdL withdrew its support for the government on Thursday.
