People disfigured as a result of the fire in a Perm nightclub that killed more than 100 people will be able to undergo plastic surgery for free, the Russian Health Ministry said on Saturday.
The latest reports put the death toll in the blaze at 109, with more than 120 people are in hospitals in Perm, Moscow and St. Petersburg following the blaze, and Health Minister Tatyana Golikova said most of the injured have burns covering more than 50% of their bodies.
"Many people affected by fire in Perm need the help of specialists in cosmetic and plastic surgery," the ministry said in a statement. "The operations will be carried out for free."
The fire started about 1 a.m. on Saturday when an indoor fireworks display went wrong. Nineteen of the injured have been flown to Moscow, 700 miles (1,200 km) west of Perm, and another 11 were due to fly in later on Saturday. All have extensive burns and several are on respirators.
Fifteen more victims were flown to St. Petersburg for treatment, with 10 being treated at a specialist burns center and five at the city's military medical academy.
A criminal case has been opened for violations of fire safety regulations resulting in the deaths of two or more people, and five people, including the owner and the manger, have been detained and questioned. A sixth suspect is in critical condition.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared December 7 a day of national mourning for the victims of the tragedy.
