A court in Cairo has sentenced Egypt's former interior minister, Habib al-Adli, to 12 years in jail for money-laundering and profiteering, Al Jazeera reported on Thursday.
Adli, who was in charge of Egypt's secret police, was a close ally of ousted President Hosni Mubarak and one of the most senior ministers to go on trail since Mubarak was overthrown in February.
He faces separate charges of ordering troops to fire at anti-government protesters during a popular uprising that overthrew Mubarak and squandering public funds.
Mubarak, currently being treated for heart problems in a military hospital in Cairo, is being investigated for corruption and ordering violence against peaceful protesters.
More than 800 protesters were killed in the uprising and thousands were injured when police fired live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas on them.
Mubarak's two sons, Gamal and Alaa, along with a number of senior members of the former administration, have also been summoned for questioning.
